2022 UCSF Library Artist in
Residence, Jacoub Reyes presents "Woodblock Prints and Medicine: Sugar
and Tobacco in the Caribbean."
This event highlights pieces from UCSF’s Japanese Woodblock Collection.
Jacoub will touch on the cultural significance of woodcraft in Japan
and the Caribbean, focusing on materials and history. We will also
discuss the relevance of the tobacco and sugarcane industries and their
influences on culture, politics, and medicine. These cash crops have
significantly contributed to the system of slavery and continue to
increase detrimental effects on its people, land, and social structures.
This event will be in the form of a
presentation and will touch on techniques and serve as a backbone for a
follow-up workshop, which will entail carving and printing a woodcut.
